The bark is astringent, bitter and febrifuge. An infusion is used to treat diarrhoea and fevers. The bark is used for dyeing and tanning leather.
Deciduous trees, to 30 m high; bark brown. Leaves paripinnate, alternate, glabrous; leaflets 4-10, opposite, obliquely ovate-lanceolate, glabrous, shining above, dull beneath, coriaceous, base oblique, apex acuminate or caudate-acuminate, margin entire. Inflorescence an axillary panicle. Flowers bisexual, pale yellow. Fruit a capsule, oblong-globose, woody, rusty outside; seeds many, winged.
