Uses

The ripe pods and seeds are used as a traditional laxative. The bark and seeds are used as antipyretics in the treatment of fevers. The bark has been used for tanning, but the amount of tannin is comparatively low

Description

Deciduous tree growing up to 20 m, sometime up to 30 m. Leaves paripinnate, alternate with 10–20 pairs of leaflets; leaflets oblong, oval, pilose, base cuneate or rounded, apex acute, obtuse or shortly acuminate. Inflorescence a lateral or terminal raceme. Flowers bisexual, pink or crimson, stamens bright yellow. Fruit a pod, 20–60 cm long, black when ripe, seeds 50–75 in number.
