The fruit pulp is commonly used in folk medicine to treat cough and chest complaints, as well as for the treatment of wounds and ulcers. Several studies have confirmed its anti-inflammatory and analgesic activities.
Deciduous, small trees, 6-12 m tall. Bark greyish brown with vertical fissures. Leaves simple, alternate, broadly ovate to circular, subcoriaceous, glabrous above, glabrous to pubescent below, base rounded to cordate or cuneate, apex obtusely acuminate, margin entire to slightly dentate. Inflorescence a terminal cyme. FLowers variable, unisexual and bisexual flowers, white. Fruit a drupe, 20 mm long, ovoid or globose, apiculate, glabrous, yellow or brownish-yellow with mucilaginous sweet pulp, 1 seeded.
